2024 Fantasy Baseball Second Base Preview: Multi-position eligibility deepens the talent pool

By | March 21, 2024

Second base is traditionally considered thin, but with the addition of Mookie Betts at the top and Yahoo’s generous positional eligibility, the position is quite deep in 2024. Betts, Marcus Semien, Ozzie Albies and José Altuve advance to the first three rounds of Yahoo drafts, which provide options if you want a star at the position.

It’s also okay to wait before tackling second base, thanks to the extra depth provided by 2B-eligible players who no longer play the position in real life:

— Outfielder Spencer Steer is an option outside the top 90, ranking third in the park of the second-best hitter in baseball.

— Isaac Paredes is available outside the top 175 after hitting 31 home runs with 98 RBI (137 wRC+) in fewer than 500 at-bats last season, and is expected to hit in the middle of Tampa Bay’s lineup as the regular third baseman of the team.

– Christopher Morel is currently listed as the Cubs’ everyday third baseman and cleanup hitter, but he has nearly 175 picks available in the draft despite THE BAT X projecting 40 homers/steals in less than 130 games.

– Justin Turner is also 2B eligible, and his ADP is outside the top 175, despite now being Toronto’s full-time DH and cleanup hitter.

— DJ LeMahieu has an ADP outside 225 in the Yahoo leagues, despite posting a 129 wRC+ after the All-Star break last season and about to make a leadoff (and play at third base play) for the Yankees.

In other words, don’t worry if you miss the best second base options in the Yahoo leagues this season.

Second baseman disappearing

Marcus Semien, Texas Rangers

There’s no particular reason to doubt Semien, just recognize some of his substantial fantasy value is purely due to volume. He has an MLB-high five seasons in a row (not including the COVID year) with more than 700 plate appearances – only one other player has that many in total since 2010.

Sustainability is a good thing! But Semien will be 34 years old this season, and he attempted to steal 49% fewer bases last year, despite his league-wide steal total being well above bases. Semien is a good, not great hitter — THE BAT

I’m fading a player with such a high ADP who should stay beating the injury odds while he was in his mid-thirties.

Second basemen on target

Gleyber Torres, New York Yankees

Torres’ power will never return to his 2019 levels, but he improved his run speed and also produced a career-best K% last season. Batting average has become the most underrated category in fantasy baseball, and Torres provides just that underrated help with counting statistics. He just turned 27 years old and is playing for a new contract this season while in the middle of the Yankees’ lineup.

Don’t be surprised if Torres has a better fantasy season than Semien in 2024.

Bryson Stott, Philadelphia Phillies

Stott doesn’t have a strong Statcast batted ball profile, but he has good plate discipline and was successful on 31 of 34 stolen base attempts last season. He plays great defense and can handle left-handed pitching, so Stott is locked into Philadelphia’s lineup (currently scheduled to bat sixth). Stott had 15 sacks over the last 57 games last year, plays in a favorable home park for lefties (Citizens Bank Park has increased the HR for LHB by 17% over the last three seasons) and can be drafted after Round 10.

Edouard Julien, Minnesota Twins

Julien sports Juan Soto-esque swing decisionsending with one of the lowest chase rates of last season. Concerns remain that the Twins may still line him up against some lefties, but Minnesota’s job at second base opened up after the trade of Jorge Polanco. Julien posted a 136 wRC+ as a rookie, is on the verge of gaining an edge against righties and is a steal with an ADP outside 200.

Colt Keith, Detroit Tigers

Keith is one of Detroit’s top talents and should get a chance to start next Opening Day sign a contract during the offseason. He hit .306 with 27 home runs and 101 RBI over 126 games in the minors last season, posting a 163 wRC+ in Double-A before holding his own in Triple-A (.890 OPS). “Kool” Keith could move up in Detroit’s lineup quickly, so he looks like a potential top-25 fantasy second baseman with nearly 250 picks available in the draft.
