If you’re like most of us here at Jalopnik, you’ve probably wondered why gas stations offer mid-range gasoline while almost every automaker recommends regular or premium fuel. It turns out that very few cars are designed for mid-grade gasoline, so it exists mainly to persuade unknowing consumers to spend more on gasoline, and it’s a holdover from the days of leaded gasoline. To explain how, we must look into the annals of history. – Logan Carter Read more

After 15 years, an essentially new Toyota 4Runner is being released

So it turns out that I wield the power of God. Earlier this week I wrote about how the fifth-generation Toyota 4Runner has been to thirteen consecutive New York International Auto Shows since it debuted at the State Fair of Texas in 2009. It looks like Toyota heard me, because just a few hours later the automaker posted a teaser image on its Instagram account showing a small image of the upcoming sixth-generation 4Runner. -Andy Kalmowitz Read more

Tesla’s quality control is so poor that customers are taking delivery inspections into their own hands

Tesla’s build quality issues are well known; From panel gaps to cluttered interiors to glass roofs that just fly off for no reason, it’s safe to say that customers should be wary when buying a brand new Tesla. The Cybertruck was just as bad as previous models, despite its $100,000+ price tag. Customers who want to protect themselves from the company they are donating $100,000 to can now use aftermarket checklists to ensure all issues with their brand new truck are logged. -Lawrence Hodge Read more

Dealers go wild when they get their hands on a new model, especially if it’s a limited edition or performance model. Unfortunately, this comes at the expense of the customer, who has to deal with things like lousy customer service – credit checks before a test drive, for example – and, worst of all, surcharges. Hyundai dealers are currently at this point. Some have started receiving Ioniq 5 N allocations and have already started increasing them. One potential buyer learned how ugly things can get when you challenge a dealer for a price increase. -Lawrence Hodge Read more

There have been a handful of cars in recent years without a rear window. Whether for aerodynamic or pure styling reasons, they instead use a high-definition camera and a digital rear-view mirror to give you a rear view. But all these cars were high-end supercars or limited edition specials, such as the Ferrari 812 Competizione, Aston Martin DBS GT Zagato and Mercedes-AMG One. Now there’s a mainstream option in the form of the Polestar 4 crossover coupe, which ditches the rear window in the pursuit of more space and safety, and with a newly announced starting price of $56,300, it’s much cheaper than those multi-million dollar rides. -Daniel Golson Read more

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class’s great sound system convinced me to upgrade my home audio

I’m not much of an audiophile. Don’t get me wrong, I listen to music all the time and enjoy going to live shows, and I’m always excited by a nice sound system in a car. But in my personal life, I’m fine sticking to my Apple headphones and the built-in speakers of my big TV for movies and games. Even playing music out loud at home is a rarity. Feel free to throw tomatoes. Where I appreciate the sound quality most is in the cinema. I always make sure I see blockbusters on the biggest, best screens with the best sound systems possible. Most recently, “Dune: Part Two” in IMAX blew me away with its use of surround sound and in-seat bass rumble for both the music and effects. -Daniel Golson Read more
